“Supermercado ¡PURA VIDA!” (Spanish Role-Play Shopping Game Food & Numbers)

There is no better way to teach kids about the names of food in Spanish than with this fun, grocery shopping simulation role-play game! In order to play this game, students should first be familiar with food vocabulary, and Spanish numbers 1-20. A class favorite for sure!

The objective of this game is to be the first "shopper" to buy at least one item of food from four different categories before your opponents, but be careful not to run out of money! Shoppers have $20 to spend at a grocery store in Costa Rica!

For this game you will need:

• “Supermercado ¡Pura Vida!” y “Lista de Compras” (printed front-to-back on cardstock & laminated)
• Food flashcards (printed on cardstock & cut into cards)
• Play money in 1’s, 5’s, & 10’s (printed on regular paper & cut into bills)
• One dice (not included)

Choose 3-4 students to be the shoppers, or have students choose partners and work in teams. Give the shoppers each a shopping list. Choose another student to be the cashier, (or the teacher can do this). Detailed instructions for playing the game are included.

Teacher Tip! If you’d like to play an easier version of this game, simply have students shop and ask for food items in Spanish! Use the graphic at the beginning for your “store front” and role-play using the play money and food flashcards!
