Flags are a fantastic way to familiarize your kids or students with different countries of the world, and get them interested in geography in general.
This set of three simple worksheets includes all 54 countries of Africa and their colourful, diverse flags – perfect for learning about Black History this month. There is a set included with the country names (one option is that students can look up the capital cities and write them underneath) and a set with blanks so that students have to look for the country names (ideally in teams). I recommend using one worksheet at a time, perhaps one per week, so students are not overwhelmed by too many countries.
- Flags can be cut out and used to indicate the countries on a map.
- Once countries are identified, students can take turns describing a flag to their classmates, using other facts about the country as well if possible.
- Use the flags as a discussion point – which flags do students like best, and why? How important is flag design?
- Have students design their own flags for their family, class, or group of friends.
There are a lot more flag activities to come, so stay tuned!
