When people think of French, they usually think of the Eiffel Tower, pastries, and Paris. However, French is the official language of 29 countries around the world. Only 40% of the total amount of French speakers are in Europe and just over half are in Africa.
It might be used in a word used in French that is borrowed from another language, but no French words have a “w” in them. My guess is that there were too many common foreign words with a “w” that they had to add “w” to their alphabet!
When the French Normans conquered England in 1066, they brought the French language with them. The new French ruling of England caused the French and the English to borrow a lot of words from each other. Without this conquest, the English we speak today would be completely different!
This prediction is that the 300 million people who speak French worldwide will grow up to 700 million in the next 30 years due to the rapidly growing population in Africa. This growth of French in Africa will change just over 50% of French speakers being in Africa to 80%. This prediction makes it an even better idea to take up French!
Unsurprisingly, France is the largest francophone country in the world, but you probably did not know that France is visited more than any other country. France had 89 million tourists in 2018 alone beating the United States by 10 million.
